What Triggers Hot Flashes? The Hidden Pattern Most Women Over 40 Miss

Mine always seem to come at the worst moment.
Sitting in a meeting, settled into a pew on Sunday, or somewhere in the quiet middle of the night, the heat climbs up my chest and my neck before I have any say in it, and the question that follows is always the same. Why now? Why this moment? What did I do? For the longest time I had no answer, and that not knowing, that quiet search for what triggers hot flashes in the first place, was almost harder to carry than the heat itself.
Here is what I have come to understand, and it changed the way I see this whole season. Hot flashes follow a logic, even when they feel like chaos. They feel random because the thing that set them off often happened 20 or 30 minutes earlier, so by the time you are reaching for air, the cause has already slipped quietly out of view. Your body is answering something specific. And once you learn to hear what it is answering, you can begin, gently, to quiet it.
"I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made." Psalm 139:14
We were made with intention, every system inside us speaking to every other one. Learning how your own body works is not vanity and it is never too late. It is one of the most faithful kinds of attention you can give the temple you were entrusted with.
If you want a gentle way to start listening, I made a free 7 day guide called Tend to Your Temple that walks you through one trigger at a time. It lives at free.debrajjeanwellness.com, and I will tell you more about it further down.
What Causes Hot Flashes in Menopause
A hot flash, what the doctors call a vasomotor symptom, is what happens when your hypothalamus misreads your core temperature and throws the cooling system wide open. More than 80 percent of women move through these during perimenopause and menopause, so if this is you, know that you are in enormous company. The flush, the racing heart, the sudden sweat, all of it is your body trying to release heat it believes you are carrying, even on the days you are not.
The part almost no one explains is what sets the hypothalamus off in the first place. Those triggers are real, and they are personal to you, and a surprising number of them sit quietly within your reach. Understanding what causes hot flashes in menopause is the very first step toward easing them naturally.
The Hot Flash Trigger Almost No One Talks About: Blood Sugar
Most of what you will read tells you to avoid spicy food, warm rooms, and a glass of wine, and all of that is true enough. There is a deeper current running underneath a great many of those out of nowhere flashes though, and it is your blood sugar.
Here is the part I found so quietly astonishing. When your blood sugar drops, whether a sugary snack has worn off or a meal slipped past unnoticed, your body reads it as an emergency and releases cortisol and adrenaline to pull the level back up. Those very same stress hormones raise your core temperature, and the flash can light within minutes.
Research in the journal Menopause found that the women reporting the most frequent hot flashes also showed the greatest swings in their blood sugar across the day, which suggests the heat and the sugar are not two separate problems at all but one shared root.
So the flash that arrives at 3pm after a light lunch, or the night sweat that wakes you at 2am after an evening glass of wine, was never the mystery it seemed. It may simply be your blood sugar, speaking the only language it has.
My Fan and Me: A Love Story I Was Ready to End
Let me be honest with you. My hot flashes are sparked by sugar, and by heat. If the room warms up even a little, I feel it coming.
And like most of you, I came prepared. I had my mini fan. That little fan went everywhere with me. Purse, nightstand, car. It was my remedy, my security blanket, my constant companion.
Then one day I decided I was done being held hostage by a battery-powered fan (lol). I wanted to understand why the heat came, not just wave it away after it arrived. So I did the research. Here is what I found.
How to Reduce Hot Flashes Naturally, The Quiet Daily Way
None of this is dramatic, and that is exactly why I trust it. It costs nothing to start and it asks for no grand overhaul of your life.
I stopped sending a carbohydrate into my body alone, and I started giving it a companion every time, a little protein or a little healthy fat to slow the rise and soften the fall that follows. An apple keeps company with almond butter. Crackers sit beside cheese or a few sardines. It is a small thing and it steadies the whole afternoon.
I let my mornings set the tone, because a breakfast built on protein rather than sugar quietly holds my blood sugar level for hours afterward. And in the evening I grew more thoughtful about sugar and wine, because both of them lift you up and then drop you, and that drop has a way of arriving at 2am dressed as a night sweat. A warm cup of cinnamon tea has become a gentle stand in on the nights I want something soothing.
The goal in all of it is steadiness, never restriction. These are some of the gentlest natural remedies for hot flashes I have found, and they are care, not punishment.
Blood Sugar Is One Hot Flash Trigger. You Were Given More Than One.
Here is what I want you to carry with you. Blood sugar is one of your triggers, and it is a powerful one, and it is still only one. Your flashes may also trace back to your stress, your caffeine, the night of sleep behind you, and a handful of ordinary things that touch each woman differently. Yours belong to you alone, written nowhere else. They carry their own fingerprint, different from your sister's, your best friend's, your coworker's. They are yours.
The way to find your own pattern is to follow it gently for a single week and read back what your body has been telling you all along. That is the whole reason I built the free guide.
A Gentle Place to Begin
Tend to Your Temple is a free 7 day audit, just 5 quiet minutes each evening. By the end of the week you will hold your own personal map of what stirs your flashes, along with a plain language reading of what each pattern means, the kind of knowing that no general article could ever hand you, because only your own body could write it.
It is free, it is rooted in faith, and it was made for women over 40 who are ready to stop guessing and start understanding this season. You can find it at free.debrajjeanwellness.com.
If you are ready to go further than a single week, The Menopause Blueprint is the deeper guide I wrote for exactly this. It is over 70 pages of research, practical tools, and faith, and it takes everything the free audit uncovers about your triggers and gives you the full restoration plan, the complete approach to the metabolic shift we have only touched here. You can explore it at stan.store/debrajjean.
And if this season is yours right now, come and join me in The Reset, my monthly newsletter for women walking faith, fitness, and midlife with God right at the center. You can sign up at newsletter.debrajjeanwellness.com.
If you know a woman who needs to read this, send it to her. The kindest thing we ever do for the women we love is point them toward what is helping us heal.
